Investigation into Haskins' Death Ongoing

More Information Expected From Authorities in the Coming Days

Dwayne Haskins allegedly got out of his car on I-595 in Fort Lauderdale, walked across three lanes of traffic, and stood on the shoulder before he was hit by a dump truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 24-year-old Steelers quarterback, who had a blood alcohol content more than double the legal limit, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the dump truck, who was not injured, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police.

Haskins had a 6-7 record with a 60.1% completion rate and a 77.4 passer rating in 13 appearances, 11 starts, and 757 total passing yards. He also had five interceptions, one passing touchdown, and no rushing touchdowns.

Haskins was one of the most promising recruits in the country and chose to go to Ohio State, where he spent three seasons before declaring for the NFL draft after the 2018 season. Haskins was drafted by Washington in the first round, 15th overall, of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Haskins was released by Washington in December 2020 and signed with Pittsburgh in 2021.

The Steelers released a statement saying they are "heartbroken" by Haskins' death.

"Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many," the statement said. "He will be deeply missed by us all."

The NFL also released a statement saying it was "deeply saddened" by Haskins' death.

"Dwayne was a talented young man who had a bright future ahead of him," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."
