First Member of Squad Loses Seat
Jamaal Bowman Defeated in New York Primary
Jamaal Bowman, the first member of the House's progressive "squad" to lose a seat in Congress, was defeated in the Democratic primary election in New York on Tuesday. Bowman, a first-term congressman, was unseated by Assemblyman Vedat Gashi.
Bowman, a former educator, was elected to Congress in 2020, defeating 16-term Democratic incumbent Eliot Engel in a surprise upset. Bowman was a vocal supporter of progressive policies, including Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.
Bowman's defeat is seen as a setback for the progressive movement in Congress. The "squad," which also includes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, has been a vocal critic of the Democratic establishment.
