Roberto De Zerbi: A Profile of the Italian Football Coach

Early Life and Career

Roberto De Zerbi was born on June 6, 1979, in Brescia, Italy. He began his professional football career as a midfielder for AC Milan in 1999. After a series of loan spells at other Italian clubs, he joined Parma in 2004 and spent three seasons there before moving to Napoli.

Coaching Career

De Zerbi retired from playing in 2010 and embarked on a coaching career. He initially worked as an assistant manager at Foggia before taking over as head coach in 2013. He guided the team to promotion to Serie B in 2014.

Sassuolo and Benevento

In 2015, De Zerbi was appointed head coach of Serie A side Sassuolo. He transformed the team into an attacking force, leading them to an eighth-place finish in the 2016-17 season. In 2018, he joined Benevento, but was unable to prevent their relegation to Serie B.

Shakhtar Donetsk

De Zerbi bounced back in 2019 when he was appointed manager of Ukrainian Premier League giants Shakhtar Donetsk. He led the team to three consecutive league titles and the Ukrainian Super Cup in 2021.

Brighton & Hove Albion

In September 2022, De Zerbi joined Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League. He oversaw the club's highest Premier League finish and was praised for his attacking style of play.

Departure from Brighton

De Zerbi's departure from Brighton in May 2024 was attributed to irreconcilable differences between him and the club's management. Despite his successful tenure, he felt that his vision for the team's future was not fully supported.
