Golf at the Olympics: A History of the Sport
The Early Years
Golf was first played at the Summer Olympic Games in 1900 and 1904. However, the 1900 events were not regarded as official by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The sport was not included in the Olympics again until 2016, when it was added to the program in Rio de Janeiro.
The Modern Era
In 2016, Justin Rose of Great Britain won the gold medal in the men's golf tournament. Inbee Park of South Korea won the gold medal in the women's tournament. Both tournaments were played on the Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro.
The Future of Golf in the Olympics
Golf is scheduled to be included in the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 in Tokyo and 2024 in Paris. The sport is expected to continue to be a popular addition to the Olympic program.
