Luke Altmyer Sees Big Difference in Illinois QB Play
Luke Altmyer, an Analyst for the Big Ten Network, Believes Illinois Quarterback Play Has Improved Significantly.
Altmyer Praises New Offensive Coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.
A former standout quarterback at Illinois, Altmyer has been impressed with the progress of the Illini offense under new coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. "The offense is night and day from last year," Altmyer said. "They're running the ball effectively, and the passing game is much more dynamic."
Quarterback Tommy DeVito Leads the Charge
Much of the credit for Illinois' offensive improvement goes to quarterback Tommy DeVito. The Syracuse transfer has thrown for 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in three games. He has also rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.
"DeVito is a really good quarterback," Altmyer said. "He's accurate, he can make all the throws, and he's not afraid to run the ball."
Lunney's Scheme a Perfect Fit for DeVito
Altmyer believes Lunney's offensive scheme is a perfect fit for DeVito's skill set. "Lunney's offense is very quarterback-friendly," Altmyer said. "It allows the quarterback to make plays with his arm and his legs."
"DeVito is thriving in this offense," Altmyer added. "He's making good decisions, and he's putting the ball in the right places."
Looking Ahead to the Rest of the Season
Illinois is 2-1 this season, and Altmyer believes the Illini have a chance to make some noise in the Big Ten West. "I think Illinois is a dark horse in the Big Ten West," Altmyer said. "They have a good quarterback, a good running game, and a solid defense."
"If they can continue to play well, I think they have a chance to finish in the top half of the division," Altmyer added.
